Our History

A Tradition of Service Since the 1870s

Our law firm has been providing legal services in eastern North Carolina since its founding in the early 1870s under the name Sheppard & Brown.

    From 1914 to 2008, at least one member of Washington’s prominent Rodman family was associated with the firm, starting with William B. Rodman, Jr., who later served as Attorney General and Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. Over the years, firm members have served in leadership positions on the local, state and national level, including three North Carolina Supreme Court Justices, three State Superior Court Judges, one member of the United States Congress, two Attorney Generals of North Carolina, and one President of the North Carolina Bar Association and North Carolina State Bar.

    The firm now consists of seven practicing attorneys.

    Edward N. Rodman: 1926 – 2008

    Ed Rodman was a member of our firm until his passing in 2008. During his distinguished career he practiced in the areas of civil litigation, including personal injury law and products liability, as well as in municipal law. He served as President of the North Carolina Bar Association from 1975 to 1976. He was a member of the Law Review as the University of North Carolina where he received his LLB degree in 1955 following his graduation from North Carolina State University in 1950.
